Ancienne famille de Campanie, de vertu claire et avérée, dont le patronyme, selon de nombreux généalogistes, devrait être recherché dans le toponyme du même nom, le lieu de naissance des géniteurs. La légende veut cependant que l'ancêtre de cette famille soit précisément ce Maione (vers 1160), fils d'un protojuge Barese, qui entra dans la chancellerie de Ruggiero II, roi de Sicile, atteignit le rang de chancelier puis, avec Guillaume Moi, amiral des amiraux, qui, en habile diplomate, sut nouer de bonnes relations avec l'Église (accord de Bénévent, 1156) et détacher Gênes de Byzance, soucieux qu'il était d'affronter en force Federico Barberousse. Sa puissance lui fit des ennemis à la cour, au point qu'il fut assassiné par M. Bonello.
