Antica e potente famiglia, la quale diede il proprio nome ad un castello delle montagne reggiane posto presso Scandiano detto Gesso de' Malapresi. Alberto di Gherarduccio de' Malapresi ottenne nel 1134 da Adelelmo Vescovo di Reggio l'investitura di Gesso, della metà del castello di Arceto e di altri beni, e nel 1142 vendette al Comune di Reggio la corte e il castello dell'Argine e la Corte Mantovana. L'investitura di Gesso fu rinnovata ai Malapresi dai Vescovi di Reggio nel 1210 e 1211; ma in seguito essendosi quelli rifiutati a dimandare di nuovo l'investitura di quel castello al Vescovo Guglielmo da Fogliano, ne furono da questo spogliati nel 1283. Nel 1320 questa famiglia, dichiarata nemica del Comune di Reggio, fu probabilmente bandita dalla patria. Ultima di essa fu Antonia, moglie di Lucchino da Lucca notajo reggiano, la quale nel 1422 volle far atto di padronanza del castello di Gesso e della
