Morello, di Obizzo, sostenne i genovesi nelle lotte contro i pisani per i possessi in Sardegna. Aveva anche preso le parti dell'imperatore Federigo contro le città lombarde, ma poi, come il padre, passò a combattere in favore della Lega. Nel 1188, in unione ai fratelli, vende' ai piacentini i beni di Val di Taro e di Val d'Ena, vendita che tagliò in mezzo i possessi dei Malaspina diminuendo molto la loro potenza. Suo figlio Guglielmo cercò invano di recuperare Carpineto, tolto dai reggiani a Morello che ne aveva fatto la capitale del patrimonio Malaspina, in quella provincia. Scoppiata la guerra tra Ottone IV e Innocenzo III segnò in Milano il trattato col quale si obbligava a difendere le ragioni dell'imperatore. Obizzino, di Guglielmo, ottenne da Federico II, nel 1220, l'investitura dei suoi domini, l'anno seguente fece le divisioni con Corrado di Obizzino, e gli toccarono, oltre vasti possedimenti
