Antichissima famiglia, la quale, al dir del Mugnos, vanta per stipite certo un Clodio Balsano, cavalier tedesco, che in Sicilia militando con l'imperatore Enrico VI venne a fermarsi in Trapani, ed indi a Palermo. Il di lui figlio, Tommaso ottenne dall'imperatore Federico II la castellania di Catania, non che altri carichi. Un Giovanni Balsano nel possedere la castellania di Lentini si tenne fedele a re d'Aragona. La famiglia alzò per arma. D'oro, al monte di nero, sormontato da un cavallo rampante di rosso. Altro ramo. Famiglia oriunda di Vicari, portata in Palermo da un Gaetano Maria che, il 18 novembre 1771, ottenne la cittadinanza palermitana e, con privilegio dell'8 dicembre 1771 ottenne il titolo di barone di Daina e Opezzinga.
