Bononiae a multis saeculis Gens Malvetiae floret, amnibusque ornamentis antiquae nobilitatis fruitur così scrisse A. L. Muratori (Rer. It. Script. XVI p. 773), trattano della origine antichissima di questa famiglia, da più di ottocento anni per nobiltà ed importanza storica della più cospicue in Italia; e citando due documento, uno del 1168 e l'altro del 1173, nei quali figura Bernardo Malvezzi console a Modena e da allora già considerato, coi suoi, nobili ed illustre. Detto principe fra gli storici, farebbe rimontare le origini della famiglia ad un Guido da Limeto, vivente nel 990, progenitore di un Manfredo, signore di Limeto e Sorbara, ceppo comune di varie discendenze dette poi dei figli di Manfredo, quali i Pico, signori della Mirandola, i Pio di Savoia, signori di Capri ed i malvezzi di Bologna: omettendo naturalmente le leggendarie genealogie del cinque e seicento, raccolte in parte anche dal Sansovino, che ne facevano autore
