I Mamberti furono fra le più illustri casate fiorentine e l'opinione che maggiormente trova credito, fra gli storici, è che essi abbiano tratto origine da una nobile stirpe germanica. Di essi si ha certa notizia sin dal X sec. Il loro nome ricorre di frequente nell'antica storia di Firenze dove dal sec. XI al XIII occuparono più volte la carica eminente di console. Vari di essi presero parte alle Crociate, altri si distinsero quali duci di milizie e cavalieri al seguito imperiale conquistandosi così onori, titoli, privilegi. Ebbero la signoria di Montisi, di Travale e di altri castelli; parteciparono alla congiura contro Buondelmonte de' Buondelmonti, ebbero un capitano alla battaglia di Montaperti ed aderirono al partito Ghibellino; per tale motivo vari di essi furono banditi da Firenze, e si sparsero in varie città della Toscana conquistando in alcune di esse posizioni preminenti.
