La famiglia è nobile ed antica Romana, abitano la casa dove vivono al presente nella via del Corso, sopra 300 anni continuamente. Furono prima Chiamati Lucij, nome che allude all'arme, che porta nello scudo due Pesci Lucij, e per un mancino di mano cangiarono nome, come i Papazzurri da un Muto, da un Cesare i Montanari e molte altre famiglie simili. Quando però e di che tempo vivesse questo Mancino, che diede occasione alla mutazione del nome, non è facile di indovinare. Il Monaldeschi, nel suo Diario, circa l'anno 1328, racconta la coronazione del Petrarca in Campidoglio, e dice che 12 giovanetti nobili Romani recitarono versi in lode del Poeta, fra i quali fu uno de Lucij, e Tomao Fortifiocca, nella vita di Cola di Rienzo, cap. secondo, circa l'anno 1348 fa menzione di Conte, figlio di Ceccho Mancino, il che si rende più oscuro.
