L'opinione che trova maggior credito presso gli storici è che questa famiglia sia un ramo dei Manfroni di Orvieto, andato a stabilirsi nel Napoletano nel secolo XIV. È comunque certo che essa deve avere avuto origini molto distinte, se troviamo che, il 12 settembre 1433, il nobile cavaliere Manfredo era capitano della Guardia di Re Luigi II d'Angiò e che questo Sovrano in tale data, con suo speciale diploma, conferì a lui, ed ai suoi discendenti ed eredi all'infinito, il titolo comitale, facendogli nel contempo largo donativo di terre e fra queste del feudo di Donnico. Alla morte di Re Luigi e della Regina Giovanna, Paolo, figlio di Manfredo, essendo rimasto fedele agli Angioini, prese, nelle lotte che funestarono il reame, gran parte dei suoi beni, e, lasciato il Napoletano, si pose dapprima al servizio di Papa Niccolò V e di poi, quale capo di milizie, a quello della Serenissima,
