Antica ed assai nobile famiglia salernitana, del seggio di Portateresa, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Conosciuta come Manganaro, come ben giusta l'Aldimari nel suo "Memorie Historiche Di Diverse Famiglie Nobili, Così Napoletane, Come Forastiere", fu da alcuni, come il Crollalanza, riportata nella forma Manganari. In ogni modo, il primo della famiglia di cui si abbia notizia certa è un Filippo che fu nominato, in data 28 marzo 1310, maestro segreto e maestro procuratore di tutta la Sicilia. Lo stesso compare anche come giudice della Magna Regia Curia di Palermo, dal 1313 al 1319. Nel 1313 Niccolò, di Napoli, aveva fatto costruire una Galea per la Corte. Nel 1382 si ritrova un certo Antonio, milite di Salerno e vice-giustiziere del Regno, che ebbe da Re Carlo III, per ribellione di Riccardo d'Ugot, le terre di Andrano e Castiglione. Al tempo del re
