Secondo alcune ricostruzioni araldiche, la famiglia Mangora sarebbe della stessa agnazione dei Mango. Oriunda infatti dalla Castiglia, quando giunse in Italia assunse diverse cognominizzazioni, specialmente a causa delle diverse trascrizioni anagrafiche. La tradizione, in ogni modo, vede come capostipite un Giacomo, che prese parte alla celebre battaglia combattuta nel 1037 nella valle di Tamara. Si dice, inoltre, che un Giovanni, discendente di Giacomo, nel 1195, pugnò valorosamente nella sanguinosa giornata di Alarcos contro i Maomettani e cadde sul campo gridando: "Por Dios y por el Rey"; grido assunto quale divisa dai suoi discendenti. E' certo che la famiglia abbia goduto nobiltà in Napoli, nei Seggi di Capuana e di Porto e nella piazza dei Saliti, ed in Sicilia, nelle città di Monte S. Giuliano e di Palermo.
