Una familia así apellidada radicó en la ciudad de Vitoria (Álava), y a ella pertenció Juan M. de Arana, natural de Vitoria, que casó con doña Isabel de salvatierra, de igual naturaleza, naciendo de este enlace José M. de Arana y Salvatierra, natural de Vitoria y Caballero de la Orden de Santiago, que contrajo matrimonio con doña Catalina Josefa de Iraola, natural de Placencia (Guipúzcoa), y fueron padres de José M. de Arana e Iraola, que fuié también Caballero Santiaguista, Teniente de Reales Guardias Españolas y Marqués de Villaalegre. Nació en Placencia, y se unió en matrimonio con doña Ana María de Aranguren, natural de Mondragón, también en Guipúzcoa. Procrearon a José M. de Arana y Aranguren, natural de Madrid, Capitán de Caballos Corazas en Orán, Marqués de Villaalegre y Caballero de la Orden de Santiago, desde el 24 de Abril de 1703.
