Antigua y noble familia originaria de Módena. El comendador GB de Crollalanza informa del blasón de esta familia en los volúmenes de su diccionario histórico de blasones de familias nobles y notables italianas. El investigador y auterovele histórico Gozzadini en su "Delle Torri Gentilizie di Bologna, y de las familias nobles a las que primero pertenecieron", impreso en Bolonia en Zannichelli en 1875. Sometida más que ninguna otra a las vicisitudes de los tiempos fue la familia actual , que, como fazzionaria de las partes furiosas güelfas y gibelinas, se deshizo, como las otras semejantes a ella, que, ya dentro, ya fuera de las ciudades emilianas, tuvo que conmemorarse, según los intereses, que coore por aquella parte, como se mostrará a continuación. Según la antigua costumbre, este se llamaba con el nombre del lugar, que no estando en uso en la época los Casati, se llamaban las familias de aquel
