Originaria di Brindisi, fu trapiantata in Lecce da un Pietro, il quale fu fatto cavaliere colla provvigione di 12 oncie d'oro annue da Carlo I d'Agiò nel 1275. Nicola e Bartolomeo amministratori del regio patrimonio nel 1277; Giovanni cappellano del Re Carlo II; Matteo, figlio del suddetto Nicola, dottore in legge, fu ricco feudatario ed esercitò per Re Roberto il sindacato su Niccola Bozzuto governatore di Terra d'Otranto; altro Niccolò presidente della R. Camera nel 1415; Antonio sindaco di Lecce nel 1498; Camillo familiare dell'Imperatore Carlo V. Fu costume delle più antiche famiglie, le quali dopo la caduta del Romano Imperio, in quella inondatione de' Barbari, havendo i loro cognomi, sicome gli studi, e altre cose belle smarrito e restati solo con semplici nomi, trarre di nuovo i loro cognomi, e il loro casato da' nomi proprii paterni, e de' maggiori.
