Famiglia nobile ed antica, che secondo afferma i Villabianca sull'autorità del Sansovino, trae origine dalla Germania, ove molti stati possedeva sin da' tempi di Tiberio imperatore, passata indi in Italia e stabilita in Vicenza ed in Genova col titolo di conte di Sarego dal castello di tal nome. Di là venne a diramarsi in Verona, Padova e Palermo. Vanta non pochi illustri personaggi, tra' quali si segnalano un Ottone de M., assai stimato dallo imperatore Enrico V, 1116; un Arrigo nobile vicentino che schivò col suo allontanamento la potenza di Federico II e la tirannia di Azolino 1256; un Corrado ed un Gilberto valorosi difensori della fede 1264; un Uguccione ed un Riccardo consiglieri in Vicenza 1311; altro Riccardo ambasicatore a' Padovani 1312; un Piosello vicario generale del principe di Milano; un Cortesio capitan generale degli Scaligeri, un Umberto anziano e consigliere della repubblica di Genova 1357-87, ed un Giacomo
