Antica e nobile famiglia di Jesi. Essa si stima discendente della dogale famiglia Marcello di Venezia. Riconosce come suo capostipite Jacopo, vivente nel 1400, che la repubblica veneta inviò quale suo ambasciatore a Napoli per riordinare la flotta del Re d'Aragona: però poco dopo la sospettata repubblica lo richiamò. Avvertito del pericolo che racchiudeva questo richiamo, egli si fermò a Cagli dove assunse medesimo cognome confondendosi con l'anonima famiglia cagliese. Ben presto però da detta città si portò a Jesi e qui nel 1496 troviamo Melchiorre, suo figlio, ricoprente la primaria carica di Gonafaloniere per la quale si radicò nella famiglia la nobiltà patriziale Jesina. I discendenti presero poi dimora in S. Marcello, paese non lontano da Jesi rimanendovi per ben 5 generazioni, indi tornarono a Jesi, ricoprendo sempre le primarie cariche. Sul finire del secolo XVII furono insigniti del titolo comitale. Luigi Marcelli nel 1700 circa sposò Virginia Flori,
