Ancient and very noble Marche family, originally from Jesi, spread over the centuries in various regions of Italy. According to what is handed down to us, it is a descendant of the Doge family Marcello of Venice. In fact, he recognizes Jacopo as his progenitor, living in 1400, whom the Venetian republic sent as its ambassador to Naples to rearrange the fleet of the King of Aragon. But, shortly after, the same republic recalled him. Sensing the danger that this call contained, he stopped in Cagli, where he took the surname Marcelli, thus merging with the anonymous family of Cagli. However, he soon moved from that city to Jesi and here, in 1496, we find Melchiorre, his son, holding the primary office of Gonfaloniere.
