Nombre latino derivado de mas-maris, cuyo significado es "varonil, masculino". Otros hacen prodecer de marcus, "martillo", o "relativo al dios marte". Además de los datos bíblicos, no llegando tradiciones antiquísimas relativas al santo, no siempre fáciles de interpretar. Su verdadero nombre era Juan, siendo más bien M. un apellido o apodo. Juan M. era hijo de aquella María, en casa de la cual se recogió san Pedro cuando salió milagrosamente de la prisión de Jerusalén. Pedro lo llama "hijo mío" lo que podría significar que fue bautizado por el apóstol. Es verosímil que M. fuese el adolescente que se escapó desnudo del Huerto de los Olivos, aun cuando la tradición antigua no se muestra unánime en esta cuestión. Primo de Bernabé, acompañó a éste y a san Pablo en el primer viaje misional a Chipre. M. volvió a ser colaborador de San Pablo cuando se hallaba prisionero en Roma. M.
