O mais antigo desta família de que há notícia é Rui Martins M., que vivia no tempo de D. Afonso II e que possuía um casal chamado Paço, no limite de Poiares, freguesia de S. João de Guilhofrei, julgado de Penafiel de Sousa, como se averiguou pelas inquirições mandadas fazer por D. Dinis, casal que então era de seus filhos, que o traziam honradamente, mas que ficou devasso ao Rei, podendo nele entrar o mordomo. Sabe-se que foi ser filho Martim Rodrigues M., cavaleiro, que teve de Teresa Pires de Vila Verde e Rui Martins M., legitimado por D. Dinis por Carta de 31 de Dezembro de 1321, de quem parece descenderem os M.. Diz-se que o apelido provém da quinta de M., mas é estranho que não seja precedido de preposição tendo origem geográfica, porquando talvez venha de alcunha, se ben que a forma pluralizada não se ajuste ao caso. Timbre: un castelo de negro.
