Les seigneurs du nom de Mareuil étaient, de même que ceux de Beynac, de Biron et de Bourdilles, qualifiés premier baron du Périgord. On sait qu'au nombre des privilèges dont jouissaient des quatre premiers barons, un de ceux qu'ils tenaient le plus à honneur était de porter les Évêques, à leur entrée solennelle dans la ville, jusque dans leur église. A la sixième croisade - de 1220 à 1248 - figure un Raoul de Mareuil. - Un Raimond était commandeur et grand Prieur de l'Ordre des Templiers dans les provinces d'Auvergne, du Limousin et du Berry en 1288. Parmi les illustrations de cette famille qui s'éteignit au XVIème siècle dans la maison d'Anjou, je rappellerai qu'à la bataille de Bouvines, en 1214, figurent trois frères du nom de Mareuil, dont l'un fit prisonnier le comte de Flandres, et, pour ce fait, reçut du roi Philippe-Auguste, la seigneurie de Villebois.
