Di questa famiglia si hanno memorie certe e documentate in Lugo fino dagli inizi del secolo XIII. Scrive il Soriani nel supp. Stor. sull'origne e progresso ela città di Lugo (Lugo Melandri 1834 pag. 21) che allorquando i Faentini condotti contro i Lughesi da Zelamasio, detto il grande cremonese, loro pretore, assediarono Lugo con Ranieri, conte di Cuneo, fu affidato a Guarisio, e a due altri maggiorenti della terra, l'incarico di parlamentare col nemico e riuscirono a stringere un utile accordo. Lo stesso Guarisio nel 1299, giurava fedeltà per la sua terra all'Arcivescovo di Ravenna. Nel secolo seguente Giovanni, di Filippo Margotti, massaro e capo della Comunità Lughese, con altri consiglieri presentava il 27 settembre 1352 l'atto della cessione di quella terra che Giovanni Visconti faceva all'Arcivescovo di Ravenna. Federico Margotti, dopo essere stato nel 1473 lettore pubblico di leggi nella Università di Ferrara, trovandosi nel 1491 Podestà di Faenza,
