Antica ed assai nobile famiglia genovese, tra le più illustri della sua terra, la quale fin dai primi tempi della repubblica godette grande autorità ed è noto che un Enrico di questa stirpe fu ammiraglio genovese e vinse l'armata navale dei Pisani. Oltre molti consiglieri, consoli ed anziani della repubblica, ha dato alla patria due capitani generali, cinque capitani di galera, quattro dogi, che furono Stefano nel 1660, Girolamo nel 1699, Domenico-Maro nel 1707 e Lorenzo nel 1744, e due arcivescovi di Genova, ambedue per nome Berlingero, creato il primo da Papa Niccolò II e l'altro dall'antipapa Niccolò V. I Mari furono ascritti all'Albergo Usodemari ed ebbero la Corsica in contea ed il feudo di Caporosso. In tempi più moderni, un ramo della famiglia passò da Genova in Argentina.
