Ancienne et très noble famille génoise, parmi les plus illustres de son pays, qui dès les premiers jours de la république jouissait d'une grande autorité et on sait qu'un Henri de cette lignée fut amiral génois et gagna l'armée navale des Pisans. Outre de nombreux conseillers, consuls et anciens de la république, il donna à la patrie deux capitaines généraux, cinq capitaines de prison, quatre doges, qui furent Stefano en 1660, Girolamo en 1699, Domenico-Maro en 1707 et Lorenzo en 1744, et deux archevêques de Gênes, toutes deux du nom de Berlingero, a créé la première par le pape Niccolò II et l'autre par l'antipape Niccolò V. Les Mari étaient attribués à l'hôtel Usodemari et avaient la Corse dans le comté et le fief de Caporosso. À une époque plus moderne, une branche de la famille a déménagé de Gênes en Argentine.
