La famiglia è nota da parecchi secoli, fra quelle nobilissime appartenenti al patriziato Tarquiniese. Mons. Pietro Mariani, fu Vescovo di Segni e Modrusca; Andrea, fu valente scrittore; Anton Francesco, dotto sacerdote della compagnia di Gesù; Camillo fu pittore scultore ed architetto; Livio, fu dal 1848, ministro e Prefetto di Polizia e nel 1849, triumviro col Saliceti e Calandrelli. Crispino, morto ottantenne il 1° febbraio 1905, fu mecenate, non comune, di artisti e poeti. Fu ammesso per i suoi, non comuni, meriti tra i Pastori Arcadi, fu console dell'Impero francese dal 1859 al 1870. Si sposò con la nobile Sofia De Filippis, lasciando alla sua morte i figli Clementina, Teresa, Benedetto e Margherita, suora Salesiana. Motto della famiglia: Cautus silet natator per undas. Altro ramo. Le più antiche memorie di questa nobile famiglia rimontano all'anno 1111. Il Dott. Giacomo Mariani fu vicario di Foligno per Corrado Trinci nel 1433 e 1434,
