Originaria di Francia, fu feudataria di Maraggio. Ragguardevole fin dal tempo di Roberto re di Napoli, Simonetto Marrese, figlio di Surresso, s'ebbe il protontinato di Taranto, ufficio che alla di lui morte passò nel 1340 a Ruggero suo fratello minore, cui fin dal 1333, per la morte della propria madre Cugnara baronessa di Rutigliano, era stata concessa l'investitura di questo feudo. Antonello Marrese, nel 1528, fu da Carlo V investito del casale di Puzzo Mauro nel Capo d'Otranto. Un ramo di questa casa si estinse in Napoli, nel 1828. Tali sono i principii, che da sopracitati Autori si diedero a questa famiglia, ma per esser questo fatto assai remoto, e d'historia molto lontana, lasciamo perciò a più eruditi delle sacre antichità, e dell'historie l'investigarne il suo certo principio.
