Ursprüngliche Familie aus dem Val di Selve, die im 14. Jahrhundert von Martello Ghetti, einem wohlhabenden Gentleman, nach Florenz verpflanzt wurde, um die Ämter der Republik zu genießen, wurde der Kunst der Schwertkämpfer zugeschrieben; während sein Sohn Ugolino sich 1373 in der Kunst der Seide immatrikulierte. Von da an deckte diese Familie sieben Mal den Gonfaloniersitz und vierzig Mal den Priori-Sitz ab. Nicolò, Sohn des vorherigen, war 1401, 1407, 1411 und 1415 von letzterem und starb 1423 und hinterließ 13 Kinder, von denen acht ebenso viele Familien stammten. Ugolino, geboren 1400, war einer der wärmsten Partisanen von Cosimo de 'Medici, mit dem er 1433 das Exil teilte. Im folgenden Jahr kehrte er mit Cosimo in seine Heimat zurück und genoss viel Macht, jetzt als Kapitän von Pistoia und jetzt von Arezzo, als Gouverneur von Pisa und als Gonfalonier von Florenz. Il 2° tipo si trova sul Palazzo Pretorio di Poppi. Un ramo della famiglia si stabilì ad Augusta in Sicilia, con Antonio Martelli (I metà sec.XVI)
