Ancienne famille originaire du Val di Selve, qui, au XIVe siècle, fut transplantée à Florence par Martello Ghetti, un riche gentilhomme, qui, pour jouir des fonctions de la République, attribua à l'art des épéistes ; tandis que son fils Ugolin, en 1373, était inscrit à l'art de la soie. Dès lors cette famille couvrit sept fois le siège de gonfalonier et quarante fois celui des prieurs. Nicolò, fils du premier, appartint au second en 1401, 1407, 1411 et 1415, et mourut en 1423 en laissant 13 enfants, dont huit issus d'autant de familles. Ugolino, né en 1400, était l'un des partisans les plus chauds de Cosimo de 'Medici, avec qui il partagea l'exil en 1433, mais, rentré chez lui avec Cosimo l'année suivante, il jouissait de beaucoup de pouvoir, maintenant en tant que capitaine de Pistoia et maintenant d'Arezzo, comme gouverneur de Pise et comme gonfalonier de Florence. Note: Lo stemma del 1° tipo si trova anche partito con l'arma dei Medici (sepolcro di Auretta di Giovanni Medici, moglie di Carlo di Ugolino Martelli, 1561, in S.Lorenzo). Il 2° tipo si trova sul Palazzo Pretorio di Poppi. Un ramo della famiglia si stabilì ad Augusta in Sicilia, con Antonio Martelli (I metà sec.XVI)
