Antica ed illustre famiglia toscana, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e del mondo. Un tempo si credeva discendesse dai Marte di Sorrento ma, sulla scorta di una assai più recente razionalizzazioni archivistica araldica, riteniamo di poter affermare che i Martelloni di Toscana discendano invero dai Martello di Fermo. Questi ultimi, originaria di Periolo, avanti il XVI secolo si trapiantarono nella città di Fermo, al cui patriziato furono aggregati. Marco, famoso giureconsulto, chiamato dalla Repubblica di Venezia a riformare le sue leggi, fece colà stampare a sue spese per la prima volta nel 1507 le leggi statutarie di Fermo, e fu aggregato, insieme ai suoi discendenti al patriziato veneto. Il secolo successivo un ramo dei Martello di Fermo vuolsi si sia portato in Firenze. Fiorendo però in tal città moltissime famiglia Martello e Martelli, si mutarono parzialmente il cognome onde non venir
