O nome real desta família seria "M. Palatino" de Villagana, porque foi formado com o casamento de Wenceslas q. Carlo (1730-1780), Martinengo-Palatino, com Marianna q. Giovanni di Villagana e Villachiara (v. Back) último de sua família; ao longo dos anos, o nome foi simplificado e "M. Villagana" está em uso. Com os dois filhos de Wenceslas: Carlos IV (n. 1762) e Leonardo (n. 1765), a família é dividida em dois ramos. Ramo I - Carlo estava entre os patriotas da revolução de Brescia de 1796, oficial napoleônico, cav. da Coroa de Ferro, conspirador contra a Áustria; casou-se com Teresa Gritti em 4 de outubro de 1819 e teve Wenceslaus, Theophilus (n. 1821, m. 1880) e Ferdinand (1826-1903).
