Antica famiglia piemontese, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in una modificazione del personale "Martino", a sua volta, derivato dal cognomen latino "Martinus", probabilmente portato da un, oggi ignoto, capostipite. In ogni modo, tal casato, verosimilmente, venne fregiato del cavalierato in seguito alla virtuosa e coraggiosa partecipazione di un Raimondo Martinetto, sotto i vessilli del "Conte Rosso", ovvero Amedeo VII, alla conquista, nel 1388, di uno sbocco al mare con Nizza, uno dei capisaldi del potere della Casa Savoia in Piemonte. Ma, d'altronde, tal casato, sempre, riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali. Tra questi, ricordiamo: Ascanio, consigliere in Alessandria, nel 1476; Federico, ingegnere camerale in Milano, nel 1496; Paolo, maestro di campo, arruolato nell'esercito di Carlo III di Savoia; cav. Ernesto, dottore in "utroque jure",
