La famiglisa Martini è antica proprietaria terriera del Mugello, dove il capostipite di casa Martino, di Giovanni, oriundo di Faenza, nella seconda metà del secolo XIV posedeva alcuni beni nel popolo di S., Maria a Pulicciano. I M. cominciarono a farsi più noti nel secolo XVI in cui alcuni di essi ebbero cariche a Corte e nelle milizie granducali, ed altri si distinsero nella carriera ecclesiastica; fondarono capellanie, costruirono una chiesa a Ronta, e istituirono un benefizio nella Pieve di Borgo S. Lorenzo, dove un ramo della famiglia andò a stabilirsi nel secolo XVIII. In virtù del testamento 22 giugno 1724 del prozio Antonio, di Bartolomeo Bernardi, utlimo di questa famiglia Giuseppe, di Anton Vincenzo di Zanobio, aggiunse il cognome e l'arma Bernardi.
