The name Mason originates from Scotland and England. It is derived from the occupational name for a stone mason, from the Middle English, Old Flemish of 'mas(s)on' (apparently of Germanic origin, perhaps akin to the Old English 'macian' which means to make or 'mattuc' meaning mattock). Compiled information from Historical and Private archive's has confirmed that the surname 'Mason' and or it's variant's, dates as far back as the 13th century were a 'Gotte le Mazoun', from the County of Hertfordshire, England, is recorded on the Hundred Rolls in 1273. The exact period of settlement in North America has not been definately determined but Information extracted from Public and Civil registry archive's confirm that one of the first settlers was a certain 'John Mason' (1586-1635), who was born in Kings Lynn,England, became governor of Newfoundland in 1615, and was one of the founders of New Hampshire. The date of emigration from England, is not known, His namesake 'John Mason' (1600-72), emigrated from England before 1633 and was one of the founders of Norwich, Connnecticut. 'George Mason' (1725-92), the American Colonial statesman formed the Virginia Bill of Rights and Constitution, which was used as a model by Jeffreson when drafting the Declaration of Independance, He was a Virginia planter by trade, fourth in descent from George Mason (1629-86), a Cavalier soldier who had recieved land grants in Virginia. As well as being prominent in the affairs of Virginia, the family also produced the first governor of Michigan. Today, 'Mason' is the '126th' most common surname in North America.
