Antica ed assai nobile famiglia umbra, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Massarello, di Guidolo, fu gonfaloniere di Gubbio nel 1350; Paolo di Massarello fu condottiero contro i Ghibellini nel 1351; Vincenzo, distinto prelato, fu segretario del Concilio di Trento; Romano di Berto fu podestà di Foligno nel 1424; Gabriele, suo fratello, fu vescovo di Fossombrone nel 1434; Massarello Massarelli fu grande erudito; Angela Massarelli fu committente della pala d'altare della chiesa di Santa Maria della Neve a Ràncana; Antonio fu connestabile nella sua patria per la fiera e festa di S. Ubaldo nel 1638. S.S. Benedetto XIV con privilegio sovrano (1748) li nominò marchesi di Burano.
