E' opinione che la famiglia M. fosse originaria di Francia, dove prese nome dal Castel Mastrello, e che fosse stata portata nel Regno di Napoli da un Teodoro Mastrello venuto al seguito di Carlo I d'Angiò. Si stabilì la famiglia M. da prima in Nola dove godette nobiltà e poi passata in Napoli fu aggregata al Seggio di Portanova, ed ora trovasi ascritta al Libro d'Oro ne' rami di Marigliano e del Gallo, ed al Registro de' Feudatarii nel ramo de' Marchesi della Schiava. Ha goduto altresì nobiltà in Palermo ed ha vestito l'abito di Malta. Il ramo de' M. Marchesi di Livardi si estingue; e succederà nel titolo la famiglia de Clario Baroni di Finocchito. Il ramo de' M. Marchesi della Schiava si estinse in Vincenzo il quale seguì Ferdinando IV in Sicilia nel 1815 e fu Capitano degli Alabardideri, Maresciallo di Campo, Gentiluomo dii Camera con esercizio e
