Acredita-se que a família M. era originária da França, de onde recebeu o nome de Castel Mastrello, e que foi trazida para o Reino de Nápoles por um Teodoro Mastrello que veio na esteira de Carlos I de Anjou. A família M. estabeleceu-se primeiro em Nola onde gozava de nobreza e depois mudou-se para Nápoles e foi agregada à Sede de Portanova, e agora encontra-se atribuída ao Livro Dourado nos ramos Marigliano e Gallo, e ao Registro dos Feudatarii em ramo dos Marqueses de Schiava. Ele também gozava da nobreza em Palermo e usava o hábito de Malta. O ramo M. Marchesi di Livardi é extinto; e a família de Clario Baroni de Finocchito sucederá no título. O ramo dos Marchesi della Schiava foi extinto em Vincenzo que seguiu Fernando IV à Sicília em 1815 e foi Capitão dos Alabardideri, Marechal de Campo, Cavalheiro da Câmara com exercício e Cavaleiro
