Originaria del Cilento, ove si ha notizia di un Giuseppe infeudato di Sezzamezzano Prignano e Melito alla fine del secolo XVII ed al principio del seguente. Ultimo intestatario Alessandro il 26 settembre 1782. Decorata in persona dell'attuale rappresentante della famiglia, in considerazione delle sue speciali benemerenze patriottiche, del titolo di conte con R. D. 23 giugno 1918, titolo esteso a tutti i figli maschi del suddetto rappresentane della famiglia con R. D. 4 marzo 1926. Durante la grande guerra, Francesco Matarazzo, cavalere al Merito del Lavoro e Gran Cordone dell'Ordine della Corona d'Italia, fu Presidente dell'Ente Autonomo dei consumi ed in tale qualità svolse opera proficua, garantendo in proprio, presso i governi delle nazioni alleate, i rifornimenti di viveri di cui l'Italia aveva bisogno. Ebbe due medaglie d'oro, una dall'Opera Nazionale Balilla e l'altra dal Banco di Napoli. Nel 1917, donò all'Ospedale Italiano Umberto I di S. Paolo una casa
