In un antico testo dell' Archivio Araldico Italiano, si legge: "Chiaramente per le Croniche Hispanesi scorge d'haver passato da Catalogna in Sicilia la nobile famiglia Amato col Rè Pietro d'Aragona nel 1282. Hebbe origine in Sicilia da Bernardo, e Pagano Mato, i quali per ricompensa de' loro serviggi hebbero dal Rè Pietro alcuni feudi, perilche nel 1282. e per la parentela che tenevano con Guglielmo Peralta presero per habitatione la Terra di Calatabellotta, e s'impiegarono anche a servire il Rè Federico secondo, per onde Pagano Mato ottenne da quel Rè i Feudi di Cullisi, Xilinda, e Villanuova nel territorio della già detta Terra di Calatabellotta nel 1296. che gli successe il figlio Gioseffo c'havea havuto la sua moglie Laura Montilana.
