Família das mais antigas de Portugal, pois descende dos Reis de Leão, por D. Hermigo Alboazar, senhor do Castelo de Távora, e de sua mulher, D. Dórdia Osores, de quem foi filho D. Egas Hermigues. Este D. Egas, chamado O Bravo, bisneto por varonia de D. Ramiro II de Leão, casou com D. Gontinha Eriz, filha de D. Ero, Conde de Lugo e um dos maiores senhores do seu tempo. Fundou o Mosteiro do Freixo, com sua mulher, de quem teve D. Paio Viegas, herdado no concelho de Argos, comarca de Lamego, onde fez a quinta de Matos, na qual viveu. Seu filho D. Hermigo Pais de Matos, foi o primeiro a usar este nome retirado da Quinta cujo senhorio herdou.
