Questa famiglia trasse il nome dalla signoria di Alatro della quale era investita sin dal 1107; in seguito si aggregò alla Capece. Godette nobiltà in Napoli nel seggio di Capuana, fu ricevuta per giustizia nell'ordine di Malta sin dal 1581, dichiarata ammissibile nelle RR. Guardie del Corpo e decorata d'importanti titoli nobiliari, molti dei quali passati in altre famiglie fu decorata inoltre degli ordini cavallereschi del Nodo, Calatrava, S. Giacomo e Costantiniano ed altri. Goffredo, cardinale nel 1261 edificò la Chiesa di S. Stefano di Alatro in Roma nel 1261. Salmonese, comandante di cavalleria ottenne dall'imper. Federico II la contea d'Alvito. Giovanni, barone di Ardore e Roccabasciarana, dal quale discesero i duchi di Castelpagano, i march. del Torello ed i duchi di Siano.
