Fra le più antiche e illustri d'Italia, a comune l'origine con le famiglie Varani ed Accorambini. Le prime memorie certe di questa famiglia rimontano al XIV secolo in cui vivea un Giovanni che sostenne pubblici incarichi nel Municipio di Tolentino. Ottenne esso dalla patria molti privilegi e onori, come quelli di avere il primo seggio, dopo il magistrato, così nelle chiese come nei pubblici consigli, le loro cause non erano soggette al giudice ordinario del luogo, nè si eleggevano magistrati municipali senza la presenza di alcuno dei suoi membri, ed una delle chiavi della relique di San Nicola era sempre a lei affidata. Infine ebbe in dono dalla patria case e poderi, ed i funerali di vari suoi soggetti furono celebri a pubbliche spese.
