Fortuño, noble y denodado guerrero, que habia sido desterrado de España, pasó desde Gascuña al auxilio del rey Don Pedro en la batalla de Alcoraz con 300 peones armados de mazas. Y por haber sido estos los que mas se distinguieron en aquella memorable batalla, quedó a su denodado caudillo el apellido o acuña Maza, llamándole Fortuño Maza, y tomó por armas: Escudo de gules y una maza de oro, conservando con noble orgullo estas armas y el nombre Maza los ilustres descendientes de Fortuño. Don Pedro Maza, que se distinguió en la batalla de la Navas, añadió la cadena de oro en cada lado del escudo de armas.
