Il Galluppi dice che questa illustre ed antica famiglia sia originaria della Spagna, ma che tuttavia durante le dominazioni di questi nel Sud-Italia, si stabilì in Sicilia. Essa è stata decorata della baronia di Sellia e ha goduto nobiltà in Messina dal secolo XV al XVIII. Un Pietro, ottenne da re Martino il feudo di Delia; un Lancia, da Catania, nel 1403 ottenne la restituzione di alcuni beni in Paternò, che gli erano stati tolti precedentemente; un Angelo, fu giudice delle appellazioni di Messina nel 1512-13; un Filippo fu cavaliere dell'ordine di Malta nel 1526; un Niccolò fu senatore di Messina negli anni 1555-56-57; un Antonino fu governatore della Tavola Pecuniaria di detta città nel 1737-38. Con decreto ministeriale del 10 giugno 1898 i fratelli Giuseppe e Pietro Mazza, del fu Antonino, ottennero riconoscimento del titolo di nobile.
