Famiglia, di chiara ed antica nobiltà, originaria della Toscana. Le prime memorie, relative a tal casato, rimontano al 1159, con un Drudo, di Albertino Mazzi. Nel 1458, la famiglia, si dotò con una cappella nella chiesa di S. Francesco, e verso la stessa epoca cominciò a lasciare il cognome Mazzi mutandolo in quello di Quarantini, da un Quarantino vivente circa nel 1400. Mazio, figlio del suddetto Quarantino, era ascritto fra gli anziani di Faenza. Un altro Quarantino e un Lattanzio, figli di Francesco, nel 1592 vestirono l'abito dei Cavalieri di S. Stefano di Toscana. Altro ramo. Famiglia patrizia ed assai potente in patria, sin dal 1306. Tra i membri che, maggiormente, la illustrarono, ricordiamo: Francesco, podestà di Reggio-Emilia, nel 1613; Antonio, dottore in "utroque jure", vivente nel 1634; Alessandro, teologo e filosofo, vivente nel 1656; Saverio, ambasciatore presso varie corti, italiane ed europee, vivente nel 1723; Alberto, canonico e Pronotario
