La famiglia è originaria dalla Campania e si trasferì nell'Umbria in quel di Orvieto verso il 1500. Muzio, nel 1663, ottenne il patriziato orvietano ereditario. Alessio Simmaco canonico e valoroso espositore della Bibbia nell'università di Napoli, fu erudito non comune, letterato distinto ed epigrafista. Domenico, fu compositore di musica ed autore dei segni convenzionali delle diverse graduazioni. Suo fratello Virgilio, morto nel 1646 fu maestro di cappella a Roma. Pietro, fu valentissimo incisore in acciaio. Altro ramo. Antica famiglia che si vuole originaria dalla Germania e che in Firenze godé delle primarie cariche dando alla Repubblica venti priori e due gonfalonieri. Nicolò fu archeologo e segretario cardinalizio. Nel 1614, fu bibliotecario della Vaticana. Luigi, fu poeta valoroso e nel 1521, prese parte alla congiura contro Giulio De Medici, sicché dovette fuggire in Francia. Altro ramo. Antica e nobile famiglia, ormai estinta, originaria di Modena.
