Di questa famiglia, originaria di Cesena, dove fin dal secolo XIII primeggiava tra le più potenti e battagliere stirpi di parte ghibellina, fanno frequente ricordo i cronisti e storici di Romagna, assegnandole a capostipite un Raulo che nel 1275, dopo la vittoria dei Forlivesi sui Cesenati, era alla testa di fuorusciti rientrati onorevolmente in patria, e che nel 1298 fu nominato Capitano del Popolo in Forlì quando vi trionfarono i Ghibellini. Suo figlio Gherardo, passato per ambiziose mire d'egemonia al partito guelfo, n'ebbe in premio per sè l'alto ufficio della Pretura in patria e la carica di Podestà e Capitano con pieni poteri pel suo congiunto Mazzolino, suscitando le gelosie e le vendette degli altri capi de' ghibellini, che nel 1306 li facevano bandire da Forlì e nell'anno seguente anche da Cesena.
