Antica ed assai nobile famiglia di Forlì, conosciuta come Mazzolino o Mazzolini, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia, con insediamenti più cospicui nel Lazio. Il capostipite del casato, al dir dei cronisti e storici di Romagna, fu un Raulo che, nel 1275, dopo l'importante vittoria di Forlì contro Cesena, era alla testa dei fuorusciti rientrati onorevolmente in patria e che, nel 1298, fu nominato Capitano del Popolo in Forlì quando vi trionfarono i Ghibellini. Suo figlio Gherardo, passato per opportunità con i guelfi, ebbe in premio l'alto ufficio della Pretura in patria e la carica di Podestà e Capitano con pieni poteri anche per il suo congiunto Mazzolino. Tutto ciò suscitò le gelosie e vendette degli altri capi ghibellini che, nel 1306, li fecero bandire da Forlì e nell'anno seguente anche da Cesena tanto che si rifugiò in Forlimpopoli.
