La famiglia anticamente si chiamava Mazzoni proveniente dal modenese,dove tutt'ora esiste ed una nobiltà. Il primo che si incontra a Venezia sulla fine del secolo XIV originario da Rovigo, è Matteo dei Mazzoni fattore generale del marchese d'Este, abitante a Ferrara. In quell'epoca la corruzione dialettale omise nella pronuncia l'ultima vocale del cognome, e, di conseguenza, taluni si chiamarono da allora in poi M. Il primo documento che sanziona questa asserzione, è in data 22 aprile 1429. E' un accordo che il monastero di S. Antonio a Castello stipula con Guido da Modena per la esecuzione di otto figure grandi. Egli lascia un tanto della sua fattura per la elemosina al monastero col patto che sia esposto il suo stemma. Una sessantina di anni dopo, ignoti assassini uccisero Francesco, per cause rimaste oscure. Il 9 luglio 1566 Girolamo fu Giacomo e fratelli domandano di poter pagare in rate alcuni debiti
