Originaria del Piemonte la Casata ebbe antica sede a Benna ed a Spigno Monferrrato. Giovanni Pietro Mazzone, Notaio Collegiato, consegnò l'arma il 17 settembre 1689. A questo ramo appartenne Giovanni Battista che sposò in Cortemilia nel 1846 la Damigella Felicita Maone, figlia di Carolina ultima discendente dei Conti di Borgone, ed il figlio Francesco Luigi, nato a Spigno Monferrato il 23 luglio 1856, ne aggiunse il cognome Gropello di Borgone. Questa Casata trae origini e cognome dal feudo di Gropello nel Comitato di Lometto che nel 976 era in possesso dei Conti di Pavia, e dai quali derivano i Gropello. Nel 1191 figurano tra le famiglie nobili che costituirono il Comune Signorile di Voghera. Giambattista, Notaio e Castellano di Villar nel 1688, fu nominato Conte di Borgone e Generale delle Finanze di Vittorio Amedeo di Savoia.
