Famiglia originaria di Napoli. Con reale privilegio del 14 febbraio 1733 venne decorata del titolo di principe, infisso poi con decreto della R. Camera della Sommaria del 31 marzo 1762 sul suo feudo di Marzano. Possedette questa famiglia anche il feudo di Rocca Monfina in Terra di Lavoro, che col titolo di Barone passò alla famiglia Catemario insieme con quello di duca di Quadri. E' iscritta nell'Elenco uffiale col titolo di nobile (mf.) per i discendenti di Gaetano principe di Marzano . Questi fu l'ultimo intestatario nel 1781 nel cedolario di Terra di Lavoro. Fu costume delle più antiche famiglie, le quali dopo la caduta del Romano Imperio, in quella inondatione de' Barbari, havendo i loro cognomi, sicome gli studi, e altre cose belle smarrito e restati solo con semplici nomi, trarre di nuovo i loro cognomi, e il loro casato da' nomi proprii paterni, e de' maggiori.
