Apellido de origen portugués. Procede de Ponte de Lima, al norte de Portugal. El más antiguo que se conoce de esta familia, según Antonio Machado de Faria, fue Rui Gonçalves de Medeiros, que tomó partido por el Maestre de Avis contra el rey Don Juan I de Castilla, en el siglo XIV. Una rama de esta familia se afincó en el siglo XV en el Algarve y otra, en la isla de San Miguel, de las Azores, de donde saldría para la conquista de nuevas tierras; entre éstas pueden contarse las islas Canarias occidentales, donde se establecieron muchos portuguéses.
