Diramazione della storica famiglia fiorentina, nota dal XII secolo, ed ascritta in Firenze, al Libro dei priori nel 1291. Dette otto Principi alla Toscana, due Regine alla Francia e tre papi alla Chiesa: Leone X, Clemente VII e Leone XI. le due grandi linee, tuttora esistenti, che ebbero feudi e titoli nel napoetano provengono da Giuliano di Giovanni de Medici (dec. 1377), padre di altro Giuliano, da cui derivano i Marchesi della Castellina; e di Antonio, da cui i Principi di Ottaiano. I de' Medici, furono ricevuti nell'ordine gerosolimitano, in Firenze, fin dal 1472. la linea dei marchesi della castellania aggiunse il cognome Tornaquinci pel matrimonio di Francesco de Medici, cavaliere di Santo Stefano nel 1750, che sposò Margherita Tornaquaci. dama di onore creata nel 1764 allorquando il Granduca Leopoldo, salito al trono di Toscana, formò la sua corte. Questa linea ebbe nel Napoletano il titolo di Marchese di S.Angelo
